The 1826 COLOMBIA POPAYAN GOLD 8 ESCUDOSThe Colombia Popayan 8 Escudos is one of the rarest counterstamp coins in the history of counterstamping coins. The coin itself is already rare regardless of condition but seeing this rare coin with a counterstamp is extremely phenomenal. Aside from this fact, the Y.II or the abbreviation for the reign of Queen Isabel II produced counterstamp coins mostly dating 1834 up to the year 1836. Coins dating 1833 and below were under the reign of King Ferdinand VII thus, such specimen dating 1826 may otherwise be classified as an impossible rarity; a man’s creation under the most unusual circumstances.
This specimen was last offered at the 75th Year Anniversary of the Philippine Numismatic and Antiquarian Society with a starting bid price of just $10, 000 (Lot No. 3, PNAS Diamond Auction March 28, 2004). The Bangko Sentral Ng Pilinas purchased this specimen including buyer’s premium and the specimen is now on display at the Money Museum inside the BSP compound on Roxas Blvd., Pasay City.
